Stative verbs
Recognise common verbs that normally describe states rather than actions.
Grammar rules
- Common stative verbs include know, like, love, want, need, understand and seem.
- Stative verbs are usually not used in the continuous form at this level.
Examples
- I know the answer.
- She likes tea.
- They want a new car.
- This seems easy.
Common mistakes
- Using a form that does not agree with the subject or noun.
- Using the correct words in the wrong order.
- Adding or omitting a required auxiliary, article or preposition.
- Choosing a form that changes the intended meaning.
