Stative verbs

Recognise common verbs that normally describe states rather than actions.

Grammar rules

  • Common stative verbs include know, like, love, want, need, understand and seem.
  • Stative verbs are usually not used in the continuous form at this level.

Examples

  • I know the answer.
  • She likes tea.
  • They want a new car.
  • This seems easy.

Common mistakes

  • Using a form that does not agree with the subject or noun.
  • Using the correct words in the wrong order.
  • Adding or omitting a required auxiliary, article or preposition.
  • Choosing a form that changes the intended meaning.
