Imperatives

Imperatives give instructions, directions, requests or warnings.

Learning objectives

  • Use the base verb for instructions.
  • Make negative imperatives with don’t.
  • Use please for polite everyday instructions.

Grammar rules

  • Start with the base verb: Open the book.
  • Negative: Don’t + base verb.
  • The subject you is normally understood, not spoken.
  • Please can soften a request.

Examples

  • Sit down, please.
  • Turn left here.
  • Don’t touch that.
  • Please write your name.
  • Be careful.

Common mistakes

  • Do not normally add you before a simple imperative.
  • Do not use to + verb: To open the door ✗.

Revision notes
